Q: Who do the sanctions against Belarus affect?
A: The Secretaries of Treasury and State have blocked the property of anyone who they determine: Is responsible for, or participated in, actions that undermine democratic processes or institutions in Belarus; Is responsible for, or participated in, human rights abuses related to political repression in Belarus; Is a senior-level official or senior-level official's family member, or a person closely linked to a senior-level official who has engaged in public corruption related to Belarus; Has materially assisted in, or sponsored any of the activities listed above; or Is owned or controlled by, or acting on behalf of any person listed in or designated pursuant to these regulations.

Q: What spurred the enactment of these sanctions?
A: These sanctions are particularly the result of activities surrounding the March 2006 elections that the international community considered undemocratic and evidence of efforts to undermine democratic processes.
